Wedding Ring
Wedding Ring

Harum's favourite colours are blue and yellow, so I sewed blue indigo rings on the pieced top - each ring is a different blue design - and on the back I used a yellow and blue Liberty "pheasant forest". The quilt was custom quilted by Tracey Pereira.

Originally, Shwe Shwe was produced in Manchester for export to South Africa. Today it is made in South Africa. Traditionally, Shwe Shwe was always indigo, with the occasional red or chocolate brown design. All fabrics are 100% cotton. Because these fabrics are starched in the factory (that is the tradition) - they are quite stiff when new. After washing they are lovely and soft and easy to work with.

Made  in 2022; 92" square for my best friend's youngest son and his Sudanese wife Harum, who got married online during the Pandemic in 2021. I could not source Sudanese fabrics so instead used traditional Shwe Shwe fabrics from South Africa. These fabrics are sometimes called 'Three Cats' - a reference to the distinctive logo stamped on the back of the fabric.

Dashing Dutchman
Dashing Dutchman

Made in 2021; Size 82" square. Block of the Month Programme by Jo Westfoot from The Crafty Nomad. The overall design consists of a traditional Churn Dash block with a Dutchman's Puzzle block in the centre. There are twelve different blocks sitting within that design. Blocks include Friendship Star, Cross and Crown, Economy Block, Rising Star, and Mill and Stars. It also included some which Jo had made up herself. Some of the techniques covered include Half Square Triangles, Flying Geese, piecing bias cut triangles and a Square in a Square. A bonus was a small baby/lap quilt made from the left-overs.

Spin Cycle 2 - Anne
Spin Cycle - I think it has a lot of movement in it like cycle wheels. It was gifted to my daughter's boyfriend - a keen cyclist. They were living in a friend's flat in London and they wanted to keep the place in as pristine a state as possible, so he asked if I could make a 'blanket' to go over the bannister to prevent grease from the bike getting on the woodwork. I was horrified at the thought of a lovingly made quilt being covered in grease, but then remembered advice I heard from Jenny Doan at Missouri Star Quilting. She said once you had made a quilt and given it away, it is no longer yours. It is for the recipient to decide how to use it. Jenny stressed that it is much better for a quilt to be used than stored away in a bottom drawer somewhere. The quilt is made with Half Square Triangles which must be one of my all time favourite blocks. Made from my stash in 2019/20

Diamond Pavers - Anne

Diamond Pavers - this pattern is from Missouri Star Quilt Company. I bought the pattern, when I did a USA quilting road trip which included a stay in Hamilton, Missouri, in October 2019. There is a YouTube tutorial which demonstrates how to make the Diamond Pavers quilt using a layer cake, complimentary yardage, and a Missouri Star 10" Square Template. I used a 10" square ruler. For this project, Jenny (and I) chose Honey Run 10" Stackers by Jill Finley for Penny Rose Designs.

Tulip - Anne
Tulip Quilt - I love the vibrant colours against the white background. Made from my stash in 2021. Pattern by Kate Henderson. This was a raffle prize to help raise funds for Hidden Gardens of Grayshott which raises money (by having open gardens) for community garden projects in the village. In 2021, COVID 19 restrictions meant we could not run the event, so this quilt, with its fresh prints and tulips, was a way of ensuring that we could brighten the winner's days throughout the year
Bees - Anne
Bee Quilt - made for my best friend who keeps bees. Traditionally pieced - made from my stash in 2020.
